The Reddy Review

29th of October 2018,
Mumbai.

After ample plenty of people had shared their positive reviews about this movie, I did a little online research of my own. Apparently Arjun Reddy was a movie that was liked by viewers far and wide and this secondary research was aided with an IMBD rating of 8.5/10

I take IMDB and Wikipedia as trusted sources and I consider movies that are rated above 7 on IMDB to be good movies and hence, I decided to give this one a go myself.

With the help of Amazon Prime and my beloved firestick, I finally got a chance to watch this movie when I had ample time at my disposal.

Plot Synopsis –

The movie opens with the introduction of the main character Arjun Reddy while he is in his last year of Medical college and it is made obvious that Arjun is a brilliant student, however, has severe anger management issues, which leads him to be arrogant and brash.

After an incident where Arjun’s displays his short temper and out of control anger issues, the deal of his college offers Arjun a chance to apologize or failing to do so he can leave the college. While Arjun had chosen the latter, he decides to change his decision after seeing Preethi, a first year medical student in his college and apologizes for his actions.

Arjun then declares his interest for Preethi to the college and warns everyone to develop any kind of feelings for her.

The movie then flows into the part where after a lot of one sided conversations and a molestation incident, Preethi also falls in love with Arjun. And over the course of the next 3 years, Arjun moves to Mussorie to complete his masters degree while Preethi stays back at Mangalore to complete her MBBS. Yet, they showcase their love and passion for each other by travelling to meet one another every time and again, sometimes even without informing the other!

Post the time frame, Preeti completes her MBBS while Arjun has earned his masters and now has arrived at Preethi’s place to talk about both of them getting married.

But an unforeseen calamity strike their rather tranquil relationship when Preethi’s father walks in on them while they are passionately kissing each other on the terrace of her house.

I completely agree, who does that? Silly father of Preeti! Couldn’t just let the story flow in peace.

Following this, Preethi’s father opposes her relationship with Arjun given that he belongs to a different cast. (Like, really? That’s the reason why he didnt like Arjun?)

Arjun angered by his humiliation at the hands of Preethi;s father, gives her an ultimatum of 6 hours, If she fails to take a positive decision regarding their relationship in the stipulated time, then she should consider their relationship to be over.
Since Arjun had created scenes of outrage outside Preethi’s house, her father decides to take away her phone and restricts her conversation with Arjun. Unable to talk to her Arjun injects himself with Morphine and is unconscious for two days, during which not only he misses a visit from Preethi but also his elder brothers marriage.

On regaining consciousness, Arjun is told that Preethi’s father has gotten her married.

Unable to turn around the events of the past two days into his favour, Arjun spirals into a life of Alcohol, drugs and that of being sex addict, all this while establishing himself as a successful surgeon. (Yes, believe me I am equally befuddled!!!)

The plot thickens when, on his day off, Arjun gets a call from the Avengers to save the world hospital to perform a surgery. Sadly Arjun passes out during the surgery but not before he has conducted a life saving surgery. (Like I said, I am befuddled!!) This leads to Arjun’s license being temporarily cancelled and he further spirals into misery.

Arjun only finds his way back in the world of the living to be on his feet only when her grandmother passes away and patches up with his estranged father.

If all of this wasn’t enough, the movie take a final twist and gives the movie an unexpected climax, alteast that’s what the writer-director thinks they have done.

My Verdict –

Allow me to write the verdict of this movie in bullet points because I’d like to break it down phase wise.

  • The College Phase of the movie clearly displays what kind of culture exists in our educational system down south. This after knowing plenty of people who have resided and studied down south themselves. Seniors are clearly given the freedom to rag and are expected to be worshipped. I thought the law was doing their best to curb this attitude but I guess a few parts of india differ on it.
  • The Romance phase – Its better that I don’t write much about this phase because I found it to have less of romance and more of mindless writing. I cant make sense on how can someone fall in love when they have contributed little or not at all in a conversation with another person and have been forced to go around without even asking if that person wants it or not.
  • The Spiral Phase – Well, he did spiral! Marks to the writer director there. However, I am yet to find a real life addict who is having a well established career.
  • Character Building – Arjun reddy’s character is everything that they want him to be, a hot tempered, negative character. But if the actor says that he had inspiration from movies like Godfather and Scarface, then that doesn’t sit well with me for sure. The female lead has played her role of a spineless, expression deprived prop to perfection. Her character however is not written well and appears to be confused between being instinctive and orthodox at times.

My apologies to those who have liked the movie and have termed it a cult but then I don’t consider this to be a romantic tale at all. Rather, I would say this is a misadventure of a broken hearted arrogant sod who inspires nothing positive in the viewers like me.

My verdict, I’d give this movie 2/10, because the only positive the movie showed us is, that the director dint give up on making the movie, despite having a script like this and all the financial crisis.

Kudos to him for making the movie happen and making profits on it.
